Dog Food Ingredient Definitions…what
that list actually means.

MEAT (e.g. lamb, beef,
chicken) –“Meat is the clean flesh derived
from slaughtered mammals & is limited to the
part of the striate muscle which is skeletal or that
which is found in the tounge, diaphragm, heart, or
esophagus; with or without fat & portions of
the skin, sinew, nerve & blood vessels.”
POULTRY – “Poultry
is the clean combination of flesh & skin with
or without bone derived from the parts or whole carcasses
of poultry or a combination therof.
MEAT MEAL (e.g. lamb
meal, beef meal) –“Is the rendered product
from mammal tissues, exclusive of any added blood,
hair, horn, hoof, manure, stomach & rumen contents
except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in
good processing practices…”
POULTRY MEAL –
“same as above except with poultry tissues”
MEAT BY-PRODUCTS –“Is
the non-rendered, clean parts, other than meat, derived
from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but not limited
to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood,
bone, partially defatted low temp. fatty tissues
& stomach and intestines…”
ANIMAL DIGEST –
“A material which results from chemical &
or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean & undecomposed
animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive
of hair, horns, teeth, hooves, & feathers except
in such trace amounts…”
WHAT YOU CAN DO...............
- Don’t let pictures
& adjectives on food labels influence
your selection; look at the ingredients list
first.
- Be prepared to pay more
for top quality foods. Pay for good food
now or a vet later.
- Always allow your dog to
be the ultimate judge of “what’s
best” for him/her. Just because a food
works for your neighbor’s dog doesn’t
mean it will suit yours.
